*snap* A nifty PSED activity to try

Here's an idea for using a modern concept to explore childrens' PSED progress, without having to actually use technology. Follow our simple step-by-step guide to have a go at this PSED activity today...
What you will need:

  • A clear camera illustration, in various colours. (You can find a good option here)
  • Laminator and lamination pouches (Restock here if you need to)
  • Mini clothes pegs (Available here)

Preparing the activity

  1. Print out a handful of your camera illustration in several different colours. It's worth laminating them so that the resource lasts more than one use.

  2. Attach your laminated cameras to clothes pegs; a bit of tape or a dot of glue works fine.

  3. That's it! Simple set up, and a few ways of using what you've made for different ages of children

Doing the activity:

16 - 26 Months

Working with 1 - 3 children around a table, ask them to look at a selection of photos of their peers (you could use illustrations instead if your prefer). Your photos should depict a range of different simple emotions; "happy", "sad", "cross" etc. Ask the children in turn to clip a camera on to someone who is feeling a particular emotion to "take their photo". 

30 - 50 Months

Working with up to 5 children, hand each child a set of cameras of the same colour, so that each child has a unique colour of camera. Challenge each child to "take a photo" of something in the room by clipping their camera to it. Start by offering basic challenges such as "take a photo of something red". The activity can be extended by using more complex challenges, introducing basic counting, or by giving the child more than one challenge at a time.

16 - 26 Months

Personal, Social & Emotional Development, Managing Feelings & Behaviour; "Is aware of others’ feelings, for example, looks concerned if hears crying or looks excited if hears a familiar happy voice."

30 - 50 Months

Communication & Language, Listening & Attention; "Is able to follow directions (if not intently focused on own choice of activity)"
