Reporting an Accident to a Parent or Carer

This guide is for minor accidents for children – serious enough to be recorded in the accident book but not so serious that the child needs to go to hospital or be immediately collected by their parent/guardian.

Children have so many accidents because they become so absorbed in their own immediate interests that they lose awareness of their surroundings. Their lack of experience means their perception of the environment is very limited, and they don’t realise the consequences of the new situations that they encounter daily.

When a child has an accident:

  1. Ensure first aid has been administered and the child is safe and being comforted by another practitioner, if needed.
  2. Record all details in the accident book.
  3. Call the child’s main point of contact.
  4. Keep calm.
  5. Start the call by saying who you are and where you’re calling from (you may have to be more or less formal depending on your familiarity with the child’s parent/carer).
  6. Reassure them that the child is alright, but that an accident has happened.
  7. Give full details of how the accident happened and whatever injury the child may have sustained.
  8. Explain how the child reacted immediately after the accident and how the child is feeling and acting now.
  9. Give the parent/guardian the option to collect their child if they feel this is necessary, or to leave them in-setting until the usual collection time.
  10. Whether the child is to be collected immediately or at the usual time, make sure to give a full briefing of the accident to their parent/carer on their arrival. Show them the entry in the accident book and have them sign it before leaving.
