Product Review: Himiku Blocks

Himiku Blocks

Before being able to experience the HimikuBlocks first-hand, I very much expected another run-of-the-mill construction toy. Now they have always been great resources, but let’s face it: this is a very hard space to do something new within...

Outside of Lego and Duplo, there hasn’t really been much by way of exciting new ideas for a long time. Sure, there is K’Nex, but with the smaller pieces it isn’t really suitable for under 5’s. So what I am saying is, I wasn’t getting my hopes up when the HimikuBlocks arrived on my doorstep.

However, dear reader, I am pleased to say that I was wrong!

Instantly the most notable aspect of the HimikuBlocks is just how aesthetically pleasing they are. From the simple box design to the fabric storage bag that comes included, to the pastel colour palette and the unique style of the blocks themselves, everything about the presentation is simply wonderful.

The overall sensory experience of the blocks is thoroughly enjoyable, their smooth texture and many flat edges are inviting for fingers, and even the smell of wood when you open the box is an unexpected delight. It isn’t often you want to breath a toy in!

The simple yet unusual design of the blocks sparks creativity and engages children toward more abstract thinking, which can otherwise be a difficult goal to achieve. There are endless ways in which a child can interact with the blocks and, by doing so, they can enhance their development along the way.

Himiku Blocks

Linking to the Early Years Statutory Framework (EYFS) can be done with ease and in a manner of ways, resulting in the blocks being a great asset to not just any home but to also any nursery or other early years setting.

By precariously balancing the blocks upon each other, children can learn how to handle their frustrations when their Himiku Block towers inevitably come crashing down and they eagerly start to build something new. Everything about the blocks oozes calmness and serenity which I believe would be reflected in the children’s play; it is hard to balance items by jumping and wiggling around, so using he blocks can encourage stillness, concentration and mindfulness.

Their fine motor skills can be refined as they learn how the blocks fit together in the best ways and tentatively use their tiny hands to achieve the desired result. The EYFS sections of Understanding the World and technology can also be met with the blocks, as children learn the different ways to build stronger and more resilient structures through trial and error.

These are not your average ‘building up and down’ blocks. Due to the many edges, you can build in any direction meaning each creation can be unique and inventive!

The collection of different colours and sizes adds a sense of variety which can then link to many mathematical interactions, such as learning about counting, quantity, and of course Space, Shape and Measure. The variation of colours, meanwhile, inspires children to be imaginative and to assign the blocks a variety of characteristics and possibilities.

The overall versatility of HimikuBlocks results in an excellent resource that leads to open-ended and child-led play, which is crucial within children’s development. It is a highly enjoyable yet vastly educational toy that I would highly recommend to any nursery teacher, childminder, or parent!
