Connetix Magnetic Tiles Review

By Anna McCallum

“Oh Wow!”

Those were my first words upon opening the box of Connetix magnetic tiles, as I was not only taken aback by their vivid colours but also by the sheer quantity of them. All too often I open early years resources to be met with disappointment at how overpriced or poor quality they are. The same certainly can not be said for Connetix magnetic tiles.

I have nothing but positive things to say about Connetix, from the satisfying appearance to the smart storage bag that comes with them. I would gladly give them to the children in my setting or equally to my own children to investigate and learn from.

As previously mentioned, the colours are so striking and vibrant that it is impossible not to notice them. The transparent aesthetic adds a whole other level to how they can be used. They could be used to explore colours and look at the world through a different, multicoloured lens. The magnetic tiles come in a vast variety of shapes and sizes, providing limitless possibilities for construction and truly stretching the imagination.

The many ways in which the tiles join together is incredibly versatile, allowing for vertical, horizontal, diagonal and even curved structures. An endless number of 2D and 3D items can be assembled which really allows children to design whatever their hearts desire, but if they happen to be lacking inspiration, a handy booklet is included in the box which is full of wonderful ideas and challenging builds.

To use the Connetix within an educational setting would be greatly beneficial, not only for the obvious links to mathematics but for a quite a few other learning opportunities. As well as learning about shape, space and measure, I immediately I thought of how they encourage critical thinking and active learning, and also how they tie in with areas of learning that cover being imaginative, understanding, numbers, technology, the world, turn taking, and exploring media and materials. Whether these tiles are being used within an early years setting, a school or at home, children are sure to gain a great deal from them.

The diversity of different styles, shapes and sizes of the tiles and countless ways they can be used is really like nothing I have had the pleasure of experiencing before, and I genuinely enjoyed exploring the Connetix. I highly recommend Connetix and guarantee that children of all ages, including all of us big kids, can have hours of fun exploring them too.
